How do you get your student to ENJOY writing thousands of words?

This class.

The 5000 Words Writing & Literature Class is a rigorous and comprehensive language arts experience. Each session students are immersed in a classic work of literature while simultaneously generating a copious body of their own writing using prompts, publication, and peer review. Students who take this class during their middle school and high school years are more than adequately prepared for college English.

High school works include:

Red Badge of Courage by Stephen Crane

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson

The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom

Out of the Silent Planet by C.S. Lewis

The Scarlet Pimpernel by Baroness Orczy

The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis

Lord of the Flies by William Golding

Watership Down by Richard Adams

In 2016 I added a middle school class. So far we’ve read:

The Whipping Boy by Sid Fleischman

Carry On, Mr. Bowditch by Jean Latham

Indian in the Cupboard by Lynne Reid Banks

Island of the Blue Dolphins by Scott O’Dell

The Call of the Wild by Jack London
